A love story. A food story. A tart story.
La Méchante is a life project born between France and New York. We, Julie and Sam, met at McGill University in 2017, never imagining we’d build a company together. But one thing was always there: French tarts. At home, every summer with our families in France, whenever friends came over.
After years in corporate careers, we wanted to build something tangible, creative, and deeply personal, not just a food business, but a brand and a community around a product we genuinely love. The French tart was the obvious choice: humble, iconic, delicious, endlessly versatile. Méchante.
While developing our recipes in Paris, we met Alex Baillon, raised in his family’s boulangerie-pâtisserie in Neuilly-sur-Seine. He joined the adventure and brought generations of craftsmanship across the Atlantic.
Every tart carries a piece of where we come from, from Julie’s grandmother’s ratatouille to a crust perfected by the Baillon family’s savoir-faire.
